Comparisons 5 better ways to compare yourself to others

Comparisons 5 better ways to compare yourself to othersComparisons 5 better ways to compare yourself to othersComparing your work or abilities to someone elses can be an unproductive and self-destructive activity. Yet we compare ourselves all the time.In my own experience, it feels like every day Im comparing my work against those I admire. Even now, a decade into my career, I can always find someone doing something I wish I could do even half as well. These schrifts of comparisons can often leave you feeling unmotivated or discouraged, afraid of a seemingly waning future, completely deprived of a way forward. When I compare myself I end up feeling like Id rather watch TV or play video games than do anything else, because why bother? I could never do what those I admire have been able to.Fortunately theres a better way to compare yourself against others. One that is much more productive and healthy. It comes down to five things the face of something is elend the whole thing, you have t o be honest with yourself and your motivations, the way forward is by becoming insatiably curious about the work, always do your own thing, and growth takes effort.Remember the face of something is never the wholethingThe fruchtwein challenging part of any endeavor often takes place behind the scenes, invisible to anyone who didnt put in the work. When you come across something you naturally want to compare yourself to- something that causes you to question your own work or abilities- its good to remind yourself that a lot of work goes on behind the scenes.Theres a fairly famous parable on this notionThe celebrated Spanish painter Pablo Picasso was sketching in a park one evening when a woman passing by instantly recognized him. She begged Picasso to paint her portrait and he agreed. After just a few minutes, he hands the woman a sketch that beautifully captures her image. The woman is glowing with joy from the artwork. When asked how much she owes him for the work, Picasso replies by saying the painting will cost something like $5,000 (give or take). The woman is outraged. Shes fuming. She asks Picasso how a drawing which only took fiveminutes to create cost so much?Picasso repliedIt took me my whole life to be able to create that work in five minutes.Be honest with your motivationsWhen you dont know what your motivations are or what youre trying to accomplish at any point in your career, youre easier discouraged or hindered by comparisons than not.Another way to think of it is if youre not running towards something in particular, its easier to just not run at all, or to burn out running in the wrong direction. You have to give yourself clear motivations in order to keep moving toward progress. To do that, you have to first know where you are and where you want to be.When I compare myself against someone I really admire, I use the eu-agrarpolitik between where I am and where they are as a method of directing my next action not fearing that I might not be able t o do the same caliber of work. What skills might have helped get them there that I am lacking? Is there a specific type of work I should be pursuing? Are there details in the work I can focus on learning to do well myself?Heres wisdom from the Dalai Lama on motivation vs. anxiety Having proper motivation and honesty are the keys to overcoming fear or anxiety. Fearless and honest self-appraisal can be a powerful weapon against self-doubt or low self-confidence.Identifying a eu-agrarpolitik - in experience, knowledge, or ability - is important, but only as much as it is a gap between where you are and where you want to be. Everything else is just noise. If youre not certain of where you want to be, its easier to get discouraged by anything you come across. But when your motivations are clear, the things that discourage you are really just signposts on where you need to go next.Be insatiably curious about theworkOnce youve identified a clear gap between where you are (or what youre ca pable of) and where you want to be, you have to get really - insatiably, ridiculously - curious about whats actually inside that gap. When you compare yourself to others, you likely fail to look deeper than the surface of the things youre comparing against. But, as you might recall, the surface of the thing is rarely ever the whole thing. You have to dig into the gap to really identify whats between you or your work and them and theirs. To figure out whats in the gap is as easy as spending a bit of time deeply looking at it, asking questions, talking about it with others, then experimenting and tinkering. In the book Elon Musk Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future, author Ashlee Vance explains how Elon Musk uses his overwhelming curiosity to suck knowledge and insights from experts in fields he has little to no knowledge or experience in.I thought at first that he was challenging me to see if I knew my stuff, said Kevin Brogan, one of the early engineers at Space X tell s Ashlee. Then I realized he was trying to learn things. He would quiz you until he learned ninety percent of what youknow.By actively pursuing his desire to better understand things he might have little-to-no information into, Elon has been able to go from launching an online payments platform to becoming a leading voice on electric vehicles, space exploration, and rocket science. You can use curiosity and the power of questions to help fill the gap. Be pro-active, reach out to those you admire or are inspired by, ask them how they did what they did or any lessons they learned along the way. Dive into the work and focus on the details of it. Really get to know the work and why it feels different than your own. But rememberAlways do your ownthingYour goal should never be to become someone else. Your goal should always to become you, the unique version of yourself that produces work only you can. There will always be subtleties in your work that reflect your experience, passion, and p erspective embrace those nuances.Of course the gap between you and your work and those who inspire you is fill-able, but only in ways you can fill it. At the end of that gap isnt another version of the person or work you are inspired by, its a version of your own work/perspectives/abilities at the same level.Heres author/artist Austin Kleons advice on how to go about doing your own thingNext time you come across someones work and youre not sure exactly how they do itLook closer. Listen harder. Then use your imagination and experiment with the tools you have. Your bad approximation will lead to something of yourown.Remember that growing takeseffortI feel like writer Jocelyn K. Glei put this point best If everything was easy, nothing would have significance.Theres no way around it the best way to grow and fill the gap is to put in the work. Whenever you find yourself afraid that you just dont have what it takes to do good work, remember that all it takes is work.Beating yourself up or feeling unmotivated isnt going to help you get better. Putting in the work is the way to get better, nothing improves if you dont do something about it. So when you identify a gap and start digging into it, remember that what comes next is the part many people want to imagine doesnt exist the diligent practice, the exploration, the tinkering, the sweat (and sometimes tears). As Virgin Records/Airlines/Galactic founder Richard Branson puts it Hard-won things are more valuable than those that come tooeasily.None of this is easy, but thats exactly what makes it so valuable. When you remember any of the above, comparing yourself to those you admire most becomes an exercise in growth and opportunity, not anxiety or failure. This article originally appeared on Medium.

What to Do If You Hate Being a Lawyer

What to Do If You Hate Being a LawyerWhat to Do If You Hate Being a LawyerYou spent three years in law school, suffered through the bar exam, secured a job as a lawyeronly to find that youre miserable and hate being a lawyer. What now? Given the level of law school debt, its unlikely that most unhappy attorneys can simply walk away with elendhing else lined up. But there are steps you can take, starting today, to put yourself on a path to greater career satisfaction. Remember the Time Before You Went to Law School Law school, and working as a lawyer, are so all-consuming that its easy to forget that you also used to be an accomplished, competent person with marketable skills. For whatever reason, unhappy lawyers tend to be convinced theyve got nothing to offer outside of the legal profession. But someone would have hired you to do something before you ever went to law school Think back to the things you were rewarded for before law school. Its likely one of these skills or traits will be part of your post-law career path. Get Serious About Your Finances Lawyers also tend to catastrophize and fear theyll end up living under a bridge if they quit their current job. While its important to be realistic about your finances, its also important not to be overly dramatic about the amount of money you truly need in order to live comfortably. If youre a highly-paid attorney working in a large law firm, its likely that youve adopted habits that arent actually contributing to your overall happiness. Although it seems like youd be far less happy in a smaller house or with a less expensive car, studies suggest this isnt actually true. And, notably, the most satisfied lawyers tend to be the ones who make the least money Give Yourself Permission to Explore Your Options It can be tough to admit to yourself and others that law isnt the right profession for you. But you dont have to make that statement right away (and it might not be true anyway). Rather than taking d rastic action, just give yourself permission to look around and explore some options. What would it be like to work as a different type of attorney? Why not set up some informational interviews and find out? What would it be like to be a writer? Why not start a blog and find out? Let your curiosity guide you, and see where it leads. Considering Getting Support There are lots of ex-lawyers in the world, and there are lots of lawyers who shifted direction in their careers. Many of these people would probably be happy to talk with you about your career and would be a great sounding board for new ideas (and potentially new connections). There are several excellent leaving the law blogs you can check out. For example, ?Leave Law Behind and Leaving the Law. Just knowing others have struggled with these same issues and emerged on the other side can help The good nachrichten is that your legal training prepared you in many ways for this new challenge. For example, you know how to do res earch, you know how to work hard, and you know how to make an argument. Sure, your legal training taught you to make legal arguments, but you can use those skills on your own behalf, too, and make the case why youre the perfect candidate for your next dream job

New study finds parents are paying more than ever for childcare

New study finds parents are paying more than ever for childcare New study finds parents are paying more than ever for childcare According to a new study by  Care.com,  the cost of childcare  has risen even higher for the fifth year in a row.  With the rising cost  comes a rising percentage of income that needs to be used on it. This has left about 20% of US families using at least 25% of their income on childcare, along with 33 percent spending at least 20% and 71% spending at least 10%. This would mean that at least 71% of families are paying more than the 7% of household income that the Department of Health and Human Services defines as  affordable childcare. In places where child care is expensive like Washington DC ($2,982 a month) families are more likely to spend 26 percent of their annual income on child care. Families in cheaper states like Mississippi ($665 a month) still spend 12% of their income on childcare.  Even more striking is the fact that when income disparity is factored into the equation it’s evident that poor families are most devastated by the rising costs.  For example, the bottom fif th of DC households had just two percent of total DC income in 2016, while the top fifth had a staggering 56%.In an interview with  Moneyish, Dominique Baillet, the senior editorial director for  Care.com, said that many parents are still actually surprised the high cost of child care when compared to other things linked to having kids. As it turns out daycare, the place with all the learning socialization tools and a whole team of people costs an average of $211 per week compared to having a single nanny which costs $580 a week on average. The cost of raising a child is already something in the ballpark of $230,000, and what’s worse is that 60% of the 1,000 respondents to the  Care.com  survey have noted that their childcare costs have increased in the last year. This has forced them to start making sacrifices in other areas of their home life. It’s no small fraction of the population that has to deal with the rising cost of childcare either. Almost  33%  of children under five- years-old are cared for by non-relatives.Ultimately childcare is just too important to not be accessible to anyone. A study by economist and Nobel laureate  James J. Heckman  found that access to free early child care results in better outcomes for both disadvantaged mothers and their children. Beyond that, it’s also been found to increase a mother’s salary on average. But no one will reap those benefits if the costs continue to rise.

Is This the Worlds Dirtiest Job Bangladeshi Sewer Cleaners Dive into Filth for $10 a Day

Is This the Worlds Dirtiest Job Bangladeshi Sewer Cleaners Dive into Filth for $10 a Day Is This the Worlds Dirtiest Job Bangladeshi Sewer Cleaners Dive into Filth for $10 a Day Is This the Worlds Dirtiest Job Bangladeshi Sewer Cleaners Dive into Filth for $10 a Day Do you think your job stinks? Spare a thought for the guys that have  the dirtiest of all professions - Bangladeshi sewer cleaners. These unsung heroes of this world risk their lives just to clean other people’s shit. Spending their days plunging into filthy drains without any protective gear, these brave men are  also known by the derogatory term methor.  It means  â€œthose who clean shit” and brings them nothing but disrespect and disgrace. Courtesy of Telegraph Take a deep breath and dive in. Now, imagine this. Topless sewer cleaners dive fearlessly into the pool of human waste. They often have  no special suit or safety equipment like goggles or a mask. As theyre often submerged up to their mouth, they cling to ropes to avoid getting sucked in by surging water.  Once they are ready, they skillfully navigate their way deep into the brownish filth with their bare hands or a bamboo stick. And when the sewer cleaners find the blockage, they  scoop out the liquid filth to  unblock the citys underground drainage. Relentless monsoon seasons dont make it easier. It does sound like a joke, but these Bangladeshi men earn as little as $10 a day.  The pay is truly miserable. But still, is the hazardous work worth it? As employees of the Dhaka City Corporation, they are seemingly  fixing the unfixable. The Bangladeshi capital - a city of over 14 million residents - is suffering from an inadequate drainage system. And  the situation often gets out of control as the characteristic  heavy rain leads to frequent flooding. Whenever the monsoon hits the country, streets of Dhaka  fill with water like a bathtub.  The overburdened drains clog several times a month and the low-lying city becomes one messy swimming pool. As disgusting as sewer cleaning sounds, someone has to deal with the situation right away. So the skilled men hold their breath and plunge shirtless into the clogged-up dirt to battle the sludge produced in the tunnels crisscrossing the overcrowded and polluted city. Courtesy of 24hod Not only is it the dirtiest job, its also pretty dangerous. Needless to say, these Bangladeshi men are putting their lives at stake. The hot, slippery, toxic chambers easily turn into death traps that simply won’t let go. With drains full of poisonous fumes,  chemicals and insects, manual sewer cleaning is definitely one of the most dangerous activities in the world. Moreover, there’s nothing to protect the bodies of sewer cleaners from the filthy sludge. And this takes a heavy toll on their health. While some of them get killed by an explosion of a septic tank, most of them die from drowning or asphyxiation. But whats perhaps even more disturbing,  an unknown number of others suffer from long-term health effects from frequent dives. Bangladeshi sewer cleaners often face medical issues such as nausea, skin diseases, anemia or jaundice. The acidity of the rotten waste is particularly harmful to the skin, too. Despite the numbers of deaths ever on the rise, conditions in Bangladesh have failed to improve. But things are changing  - the alarming state led to recent governments ban on manual sewer cleaning in another capital of New Delhi in India. But not everything about this job is shit. Sometimes they strike gold. It seems theres nothing that would convince you to hop down the manhole. But actually there are some individuals  making money off the sewers and the area of Dhakas historic gold bazaar is the perfect spot. In fact, its not uncommon to see people looking for tiny specks of gold that were accidentally brushed into the sewer.  And with a bit of luck, those who do not mind getting their hands dirty can easily come across a fine piece of jewellery. From rags to riches, as they say. Did the fate of sewer cleaners make you reevaluate your career?  Head over to our resume builder and improve your future job prospects with . Make a Modern Resume in 3 Steps

Make a Modern Resume in 3 Steps Make a Modern Resume in 3 Steps 5Revamping your resume and staying up with the times is important. If it has been a while since you’ve updated your resume or if you are crafting one now for a new job search, there are three key steps you can take to create a modern resume to keep up with new job search processes. Consider the following dos and don’ts when it comes to designing a resume today. Here are three tips to create a modern resume for your job search: 1. Use keywords. The biggest thing that has changed about job searching in the last several years is that more and more of it is now conducted online. According to 2015 research from Jobvite, nearly all (92 percent) of recruiters use social media to look for potential candidates. With that in mind, it’s important to craft your resume in such a way that the right decision-makers can find it. This means using relevant keywords so that your resume will stand out with recruiters and hiring managers in your industry. The right keywords are those that a recruiter might type into a search engine when trying to fill the position you’re interested in. The job title, function, and skills are great places to start. For example, if you’re applying for a position as an international sales manager with marketing ability, you’d want to include “sales management,” “international,” and “marketing” as keywords near the top of your resume. 2. Include data and metrics. With the job market becoming more and more competitive, you can separate yourself from the pack by including details about the quantity of impact you’ve had in various positions. That means using exact numbers, dollars, percentages, and statistics to reveal your success in reaching specific goals. Avoid using vague terms like “doubled” or “cut costs” unless you’re including the actual figures. If your actions led to a financial benefit or impact for the company, be sure to mention that as well. When figuring out how to quantify your accomplishments, think in terms of: range frequency scale For example, if you don’t know the exact number, stating a general range will allow you some leeway while still providing ballpark figures. Including numbers related to frequency can help reveal the volume you can handle, and focusing on scale can show how you can help to save corporate cash. 3. Get specific. In the old world of job search, you might have been able to get away with crafting a single resume to apply for multiple positions. Not so anymore. With so many positions being filled online from resumes posted on job sites, you’ll need to tailor each resume (and cover letter for that matter) to include the appropriate keywords for each opportunity. Customizing your resume to each specific position by addressing how you can help with what’s described in the job posting can also be impressive to hiring managers. Who would you rather hire- someone who has sent you a generic resume and form-like cover letter that doesn’t address how she can help you with the exact job duties you’ve posted? Or a true professional who has taken the time to show how his background and skill set are a perfect match for the position that you need to fill? If you’re like most recruiters, you’ll choose the latter- so take the extra time and rework your resume as needed for each job to which you apply. They say that the only thing constant is change, and that’s true for the modern job search as well. Stay up to date with the latest trends among recruiters and hiring managers by inserting the right keywords in your resume, including specific numbers and figures to quantify your value and impact, and customizing each resume and cover letter to a specific position. By keeping current, you’ll improve your chances of being offered the job you really want. Readers, what steps have you taken to create a modern resume for todays job searching? Which skills are the best to list on a project engineer resume? The best skills to list on any resume are the ones you have that m atch those listed in the job description. In the case of a project engineer, think about which skills are essential to the job, including time management, ability to delegate, planning, scheduling, and teamwork. For more ideas, see the project engineer resume sample.2. Whats the best way to include digital skills on a project engineer resume?Your core qualifications section can include technical and digital proficiencies as well as soft skills. When deciding what items to add to this section, think about which ones are most relevant to the job you’re applying for. Some digital skills are vital to getting the job done, whereas others may not affect your chances of success. Put the essential aptitudes in the qualifications section, like the writer of the project engineer resume sample has done, and mention other digital skills in your work experience section where applicable.3. Whats the best way to show you work well in a team on a project engineer resume?Soft skills, such as teamw ork and effective communication, can be difficult to quantify. Showing that you work well on a team is better than simply stating that you do, but how can you demonstrate such a quality on your resume? One way is by quantifying the effects of your team mindset in your experience section. For example, you can say “worked with a team to accomplish” or “led a team to” followed by a quantifiable result. If you can’t come up with anything concrete, you should still add this and any other essential soft skills to your core qualifications section. See the project engineer resume sample for more examples.4. How can you separate your project engineer resume from other candidates resumes?Standing out from the crowd may be easier to do in person than on paper, but with a few simple tweaks, you can use your resume to get the attention of a hiring manager. First, understand how you as a new hire would fill a need or solve a problem for the company. Then focus your resume on filling tha t need or solving that problem. The job description you’re responding to will probably have a list of required or desired qualifications, so start with that list when creating your summary and skills sections. Another thing that can help you stand out from other applicants is always putting accomplishments in your work history section, the way the project engineer resume sample does, instead of creating a boring list of duties. Use our quick resume builder to help you complete a standout resume in minutes.5. How do you write about hobbies on your resume?Depending on what kind of hobbies you have, you may want to leave them out, as the project engineer resume sample does. However, some companies encourage employee involvement in activities outside of work, and if you know that’s the culture at where you’re applying, go ahead and include your personal interests. Otherwise, it’s best only to mention hobbies that have something to do with the job or that have taught you relevant transferable skills.

Lessons from Larry David Why you should be a curmudgeon at work

Lessons from Larry David Why you should be a curmudgeon at work Lessons from Larry David Why you should be a curmudgeon at work When the HBO hit series “Curb Your Enthusiasm” returned to HBO earlier this month after a six-year hiatus, it brought with it the return of a host of cringe-inducing personal and professional confrontations that series creator Larry David gets himself into on screen.Since pop culture can be a treasure trove of life and career inspiration, we thought we’d examine some of the finer points of channeling your inner misanthrope for good, and the unexpected ways that Larry David-level crankiness can actually benefit you.In other words, sometimes it might be worth asking yourself, WWLD? (What Would Larry Do?)Optimism is the enemy (at least some of the time)According to an article in The Atlantic a few years back, positive thinking can actually be a bad thing if it zaps your motivation toward working toward your goals. The article references Dr. Gabriele Oettigen’s book Rethinking Positive Thinking, in which she mentions that optimism is a “critical component of conceiving goals” but it can actually become a barrier when trying to work toward them since it can ultimately, diminish your motivation to complete your task. “In other words, dreaming isn’t doing.”Lesson learned from Larry: The glass really isn’t half full all the time. Try to plan beyond your goal to keep you working instead of giving up when you’re close to the finish line.Cranky people get respectHuman Resources Analyst  Laura Handrick  has never been never been the cranky one in the workplace, but she has noticed and often admired them “Because they’re the ones that take a more cautious approach, glass half empty, ‘what might go wrong’ point of view - and often they’re not only correct, but people listen to them.”For that reason, Handrick admits that “The cranky ones are the people I trust to vet my ideas and make sure I’m not too enthusiastic about a new process, software purchase, or approach. If I think something is a great idea (ice cream social!) they’re the f irst to tell me it’s not such a cool idea and why (lactose intolerant team members).”Handrick explains that “The cranky ones are the people who typically have been in the company a while, seen it done before, (seen it fail before) and can steer me clear of mistakes and landmines.” More than that, “they’re the ones who know exactly how to complete the IT project proposal in just the right way to make it through to the steering committee… they know exactly what not to do. And they pride themselves on that knowledge.”Lesson learned from Larry: Find a mentor who’s failed before succeeding. It’s easy to try to cozy up to the golden boy in the office, but sometimes it’s the people who have been around the longest who’ve seen everyone else’s rise and fall who can help you out the most.Pessimists live longerA few years back a German study of over 40,000 people reported that “Pessimism about the future may encourage people to live more carefully, taking health and safety precautions.” I’m not suggesting you go full grouch all the time, but it makes sense. Feeling great about everything all the time might mean you’re missing warning signs or not taking them seriously enough…A lot like Larry David in his show.Lesson learned from Larry: It’s fine to be inexplicably exuberant much of the time - as long as you’re paying attention to the potential stumbling blocks in your way.Slow and steady wins the raceCurb Your Enthusiasm has had a particularly long shelf life by TV standards. In fact, it’s been about 17 years since the first episode aired and there’s no end in sight. With so many shows being canceled immediately after the pilot, it’s encouraging to know that a show about a mostly unlikeable man messing up repeatedly has been on the air in some form or another for close to two decades.Lesson learned from Larry: Timing really is everything. If your project doesn’t seem to be working, head back to the drawing board and try to find a way to make it relevant for the here and now. Tweak. Revise. Rework as needed.Don’t play by other people’s rulesIt’s important to realize that despite his eponymous shlub of a character on the show, Larry David the man is not the TV character. In fact he’s one of the most successful producers of all time - guiding “Curb Your Enthusiasm” as on “Seinfeld” (co-created by David) - towards subject matter that examines the tiny details and annoyances that make up daily, if exaggerated versions of life. The dialogue on both shows is largely retroscripted, or improvised by the actors who are given an outline by David.Lesson learned from Larry: There’s a way to do things in life, and then there’s the Larry David way - both the real man and the fictionalized version. David doesn’t seem to play by all of Hollywood’s rules and he’s still managed to carve out a niche career playing a guy who gets things wrong all the time.

What Kimmy Schmidt can teach us about emotional intelligence

What Kimmy Schmidt can teach us about emotional intelligence What Kimmy Schmidt can teach us about emotional intelligence If you’ve powered through Season 3 of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt now streaming on Netflix, you’ve already discovered that Kimmy tries several careers before she learns that she has an extremely high level of emotional intelligence.Despite living trapped in an underground bunker for 5 years and New York City for only two more, Kimmy may have an incredibly hard time with the day to day intricacies most of us take for granted- and acts in ways many find outlandish- but for the most part she seems to have an innate ability to grasp larger picture issues relevant to the people around her.Emotional intelligence at workWhen discussing 4 signs of emotional intelligence, Kimberly A. Barchard Associate Professor in Quantitative Psychology, University of Nevada and Jose M. Mestre Professor of Emotion and Motivation, University of Cadiz, wrote “emotional intelligence can mean the difference between behaving in a socially acceptable way and being considered to be way out of line.” They elaborated that “emotional intelligence is essentially the way you perceive, understand, express, and manage emotions.” It also includes your social behavior:  â€œit might be these are things you do without even really thinking â€" which can be the case for a lot of people. Or it might be that these are skills you know you need to work on.” Here are some other ways that in addition to the expected zaniness, in-jokes and sight gags (I spotted Korn Czechs breakfast cereal twice) this season of Kimmy Schmidt showed us how to be more emotionally intelligent at work.Be here now  At one point, landlady Lillian’s love interest, grocery chain magnate Artie Goodman says to her, “you’ve spent 40 years stuck in the past, now you’re worried about the future. All I have is now.” The character of Goodman went from rags to riches and currently has a serious heart condition. In that moment, he inspires anyone who’s been so focused on past performance or an upcoming performance re view that they’re missing opportunities to connect with co-workers or curry favor with the boss.Career lesson learned from Kimmy: Don’t be so focused on looking back or worrying about what’s next, that you lose sight of the immediate opportunities in front of you. Right now counts for a lot.Don’t be fooled by what looks good on paperKimmy takes a career aptitude test that suggests she should be a school crossing guard. After some amazing plot twists, Kimmy actually ends up acing her crossing guard test after exhibiting a level of emotional intelligence and deep compassion that proves she understands not just the immediacies of the job, but the intricacies as well. In that moment we end up believing that Kimmy’s found her professional calling, though we can’t help but wonder if she’s selling herself short. In college, I took an extensive career aptitude test and the results told me I would make a great benevolent despot of a small island nation (true story) - and while I’m sure I would, it wasn’t quite the most insightful piece of advice I’ve ever received.Like Kimmy, I had to get past the part that sounded good on paper and find my own path. Incidentally, my second suggestion was becoming a writer.Career lesson learned from Kimmy: Just because your career path seems set in stone doesn’t mean it is. All the aptitude tests in the world mean nothing if your job is soul crushing or mind numbing. Use aptitude tests as guides if needed, but also realize that you should trust your gut and the advice and input of career coaches, mentors, family and friends.Acknowledge your emotions - and imagine what others must be feelingOne of the more poignant storylines this season involves Titus and Mikey’s breakup. While it’s played for laughs, there’s also deep emotional growth on the part of both characters who often express their emotions on the most basic level.Yale has a Center for Emotional Intelligence whose mission is to create a positive env ironment in classrooms for students and teachers to express emotions in a healthy way to pave the way for better adults. They describe their program and the reasons for it this way “Emotions drive learning, decision-making, creativity, relationships, and health. The Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence uses the power of emotions to create a more effective and compassionate society. The Center conducts research and teaches people of all ages how to develop their emotional intelligence.” One of the more rousing endorsements for the program is by a 5th grader quoted on their handout saying the program is “a way for children to express their feelings without fear of being laughed at… you notice that other people have the same feelings as you.”Titus isn’t great at relationships and Mikey is still learning the ropes of life as a gay man. At one point Titus publicly and hilariously declares his intention to win back Mikey’s love.Mikey’s response? “I don’t know what to say.”Titus, known for his over the top persona in all things, answers in an incredibly mature way when he replies, “so don’t say anything.”Career lesson learned from Kimmy: In work and in life, we can be so focused on what we think we need or want, that we sometimes forget to take the other person’s thoughts or needs into account. The next time you’re trying to negotiate for a raise, or are about to tell off a co-worker, realize that they might not have the means or solutions to give you what you want at that exact moment. Sometimes you have to be okay just saying your piece and not knowing what comes next. And in case you’re wondering, at the end of the season Kimmy is offered a fancy and fantastic job by her classmate Zach, who makes it clear her emotional intelligence is welcome in his new startup, so that he never has to talk to his own employees. A great reminder that actions frequently speak louder than the exact right words.

From Seed to Fruit, with David Blivin

From Seed to Fruit, with David Blivin From Seed to Fruit, with David Blivin From Seed to Fruit, with David Blivin There are a lot of technology companies that owe their existence and success to David Blivin. Hes the co-founder and managing director of Cottonwood Technology Fund, based in Los Alamos. Before he set up shop in New Mexico, he raised funds for technology companies in the southeast with Southeast Interactive, which he also founded and served as managing director. There he had his hand in more than a billion dollars worth of fund raising and exit transactions. Q: Can you describe the process of how your organization decides what to fund? DB: We really look for strong IP/science-based investments. Further, we look for innovation that we describe as off the innovation curve. These are situations where a unique approach is being developed, with the potential to disrupt the current incumbents and approaches if successful. Q: Do you ever take on projects that you might consider risky simply because you personally (or as a group) would love to see the product become a reality? DB: That probably describes every investment we make. Were generally involved as founding capital behind the companies and innovations that we back. At this stage, all risks are still on the table. In every case, if these technologies reach the marketplace we believe the impact can be significant. David Blivin Q: In the complicated world of nano and micro engineering how do you determine if something is truly viable? DB: We are generally testing the market need for these technologies with our extensive network of corporate relationships. In all cases so far, the technology has worked and the products have been successfully developed. What becomes the bigger challenge is market acceptance. Because these solutions have never been seen before there is a natural reluctance by industry to switch from their current tried-and-true approaches. As a result we have to plan for extra time to educate the customer targets and for them to validate the technology performance with their own engineers. Q: For some products the science can be quite sound, but the cost to manufacture is hard to determine. How do you weigh these unknowables? DB: At the stage that we invest, you are correct, the manufacturing details are largely unknowable. We try to keep this up front as the product is being developed so that manufacturability and scalability are being constantly considered along the development path. Q: Since you often work to bring in additional funding, do you find yourself as deeply immersed in the ideasand, ultimately, as well versed in the scienceas the original idea generators? DB: The majority of our next rounds of funding have come from strategic/corporate investors. This occurs because we involve them early, even in our evaluation process. Because of the inherent disruptive potential, if the corporations first support the market opportunity for the technology and then see that it works when they receive initial samples or prototypes. The natural evolution of the discussion becomes financially supporting the companys success. We dont really have to become experts in the science. We become experts in the market applications and market sizes for the science. Ultimately investors look to make money, so its more about the market opportunity than about the science itself. Q: You called the management team the most critical piece. Can you talk about how that might not be obvious to entrepreneurs? Are they often put off by the suggestion youve made that the science is the easy part? DB: One of the reasons we invest more in the beginning than many seed stage investors is to team a business person or team with the technology team at the beginning. Almost always with IP based technology companies, the founders are going to be technologists. Many believe the technology will sell itself because it is so compelling versus the current solutions; that if they build the product, the market will beat a path to their door. After we meet with them they generally begin to understand that the market/adoption risk is real and challenging. The more unique the technology the more true this is. So the adoption challenges are proportional to how disruptive the technology can become. The more disruptive, the harder it is, which is counterintuitive to many. Ultimately, we only invest when we can come to a meeting of the minds in this regard. Q: Similarly, youve said that its not always the best ideas but the best people who get funded. How should entrepreneurs work this into their proposals? Do you consider yourself, then, more of a talent scout? DB: At the stage that we invest, the companies are still very technologist heavy. The uniqueness of the solutions means they are by default some of the best people in their field. So we generally start with seeking compelling science with large market opportunities. Then we begin to consider the team needed to successfully build the company. The founders can almost always build the product, as I indicated earlier, but they cant always build the company or sell the product. Thats where we focus on building a common vision for how the team will need to be built over time and what critical skills might be needed immediately. Then we want to work as partners to fill the boxes as resources allow over time. If we want to be world champions [of the NBA], do we not want LeBron James or Stephen Curry on our team because someone might have to step into a support role? We try to invest only when we are working with founders who are driven to see the company be successful ahead of their persona l role and success. At the seed stages, or even later stages, entrepreneurs serve themselves well when they build into their presentations an honest assessment of what skills are already present in the company and what skills they want to recruit, with the emphasis on winning over self preservation and control. They should seek capital providers with a similar vision and a successful track record of partnering and working cooperatively toward company success. Q: What would you say to entrepreneurs fearful of losing control of their projects? How do you convince them that the risk of failure is greater than the disadvantages of losing control? DB: If they pick the right partners then control becomes less of an issue. Many times they can view investors as seeking control to ensure their returns. But in truth that almost never works out for the investors if that is their approach. We have no desire to run the company and of course are never technical equivalents who could step in to complete the product development. If we dont leave sufficient incentive and motivation for the key people to work in their own self-interest, not to make us rich but make themselves rich, then the chances of success become less. So we approach entrepreneurs with a value proposition that includes more than our money, but also our extensive network to customers and additional capital, and our experience in partnering with other entrepreneurs to help them build successful companies. We encourage them to contact other entrepreneurs weve worked with to get comfortable with our ability to be a partner in helping create value. Once they understand that were there to help them maximize the potential of their idea and company, not to take it from them, control generally becomes less important. Michael Abrams is an independent writer. For Further Discussion We don’t really have to become experts in the science. We become experts in the market applications and market sizes for the science.
