Lessons Learned from Odd Moments on the Job 2 Sometimes even the odd moments at work can teach you something useful. Common sense isn't so common One of the first jobs I ever had was in a fast-food pizza restaurant in Montreal. The youngest by far on a shift of 3, I started as pizza maker and then graduated to cashier. Why was a 16-year old dealing with customers after only a few days on the job? Like most other pizzerias we also sold ice cream, which used to arrive in large vats. During those first days, one of my colleagues put away a vat of vanilla beside the cleaning supplies in the *storage room*. Avoid making assumptions Working at Amazon.com HQ in Seattle on the 3rd floor, I often took the stairs to get some exercise. The stairwell usually empty, I would run up and down as fast as I could. One day I was bombing down the steps, swinging myself around on the metal banister when I almost collided full-bore into legendary CEO Jeff Bezos on his way up. Luckily, I was able to yell “Jeff!” and throw myself against the wall in time. He was nice about it and with the reinforced concrete cushioning my body, I decided to walk from then on. internship till after my exams University of Manchester Careers Blog

Can I leave looking for a job / internship till after my exams University of Manchester Careers Blog Yes you can but a) it depends what point you are starting from and b) it may limit some opportunities. Obviously there comes a point when you just cant do two things at once.   Exams are coming like an express train and you need to do what you  must to  get through them. That said I notice the gym is fairly busy at the moment so students are taking plenty of healthy breaks to refresh mind and body. Its a good strategy, breaking your day into chunks and concentrating fully on one thing at a time.   Could one of those breaks be to think about what happens after the exams? Some strategies to consider now 1   Have coffee / lunch with friends and discuss your plans for summer or beyond. Just get that conversation out there and see who is doing what, get some inspiration. 2   If you are in final year and have no plans or ideas for what you want to do after you graduate it might be worth finding 30 mins to schedule a careers appointment. NO PRESSURE   just to make a plan for after the exams, you may be leaving Manchester and will need an exit  strategy. 3 If you know what you want to do then just keep an eye on vacancies, you wouldnt want to miss out on applying for your dream job.   You can get some help with the application from us and that should make it easier.   You can set up an email alert on CareersLink and on many other services. 4 If you missed the Grad Fair here you can still check out what the exhibitors were looking for, and apply.  Or you may be able to catch one somewhere else in the country  . Leaving it all till after the exams and taking a break? Ok yes clearing your head is an option, how long do you need?  Exams end for most students in early June, so taking a couple of weeks off takes you to July. 1  If you are graduating and want to stay in Manchester  MGT could be a good option for you.  The turn around from application to starting work can be faster (as little as a month)  and the competition is a lot lower, as its only for Manchester University students. 2  By July most graduate schemes will be wrapping up recruitment so if you see one that is still open you need to apply fast.  Smaller employers are more agile and can recruit quickly so you will find a lot of these opportunities around. 3 If you are just looking for summer work then July is well is into the season, so youll need to look for immediate start opportunities.  Keep a look out for businesses advertising in the window or ask friends to put a word in for you where they work if anyone leaves! Looking for a job can take ages, theres the searching, the application, waiting to see if you will get an interview (several rounds of interview/ assessment centre) it can take months. So splitting this process into before and after exams might be an idea. You want the summer off? Well I do see where you are coming from (been there, bought the T shirt) BUT 1 If you are  a graduate you will find ad hoc opportunities available.  You might need to take a speculative approach if there are companies you want to target.  If a graduate scheme is what you want you will need to find experience for the year  and apply for the following summer start dates. An internship through  MGT could be a great springboard. 2 If you are a prefinal year student.  Youll need to think carefully about what you achieved in the summer (other than a tan). Did you volunteer? Do some casual work? Travel independently and gain valuable skills? Can I take a holiday if I start work in Summer? No one expects students to graduate and walk into a job the next day and not take a holiday ever!  We all need a break from work, many employers will be accommodating if you have a holiday already booked or want to take leave.  Just be aware you are likely to be part of a team or could be working on something time sensitive so some give and take may be needed. You think it’s a rat race or a breeze, chaotic, or linear. You may even think you know who you are in the hearts and mind of people who meet you and interact with you. I do mean putting astronaut on your life list so your mind can do the work to get you into space. It will, if you will. If you can say it, you can do it. I own that phrase but you may borrow it. Fill yourself with the feeling that you are missing something great. Talk to yourself about how much you don’t want to miss out. My niece Lexy came from New Jersey into LA last week. For the first time, she saw a totally different self: same girl, just radically different aspirations. She breathed in the sun, without the humidity. She long-boarded on the strand, she wore high heels for the first time, she talked late into the night about coming back, to go to UCLA. She was an “only child,” for the first time â€" not sharing airtime with an older brother and sister.   She began to understand that her world could be “Lexy-centric.” She realized the soundtrack to her life wasn’t fixed with the voices of people whose job it was to tell her what to do. That’s their job now, but it won’t be forever. So much unfolded in such a short time, simply because Lexy boarded an airplane that took her into a different direction and a never before seen dimension. The complexion of her life is changed forever, simply by putting herself on unfamiliar ground. And, she looks good with a tan. Most of us have been enjoying our holiday and/or Christmas decoration probably since the beginning of the month. But in case you are having guests over this weekend and are looking for some last minute ideas, I got a few for you!I literally whipped these decorations together last week right before my Friendsmas Party. So they are VERY, very easy to source and put together. Places you’d have to go to source these materials: Dollar Tree, Home Depot, Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, and as always, Target!Buy a Christmas Wreath:  OK I know this isn’t exactly an insightful tip. But Christmas wreaths really are those decorations that just set the tone for your entire house or apartment! There are many inexpensive options from the stores I mentioned above. But if you want something that’s just a little more exquisite, Silk Plants Direct offers beautifully crafted holiday wreaths on their w ebsite. I was blown away when I received it in the mail… the colors are gorgeous, the decorative pieces are intricately strewn together, and it looks amazing. The only downside was that a couple of the pine cones had fallen off during shipping. It didn’t take much effort to glue them back on, but I thought I would mention that.Silk Plants Direct (c/0):  Hydrangea, Helleborus, Pine Cone Wreath â€" Green Red  Table Centerpiece:  This centerpiece  features a $1 religious candle from Dollar Tree and miniature Christmas wreath from Trader Joe’s with a few festive bows with wires. If you’re in a cat household like I am and cannot have a Christmas tree (see the reason why here), having a little wreath like the one I got from Trader Joe’s makes up for it a lot. It’s made of real fir leaves and pine cones so it has the lovely tree fragrance!  Fireplace mantel decoration: This entire area features some holiday faux-fur knit stockings from Target, lighted (with Philips string light s) metal Christmas tree and other faux-plants from Michael’s. Remember, a lot of these items go on sale right after Christmas… so if you are the kind fo plan ahead, don’t forget to snatch up some of these super cute decorations comes December 26th!    Lighted glass wine carafe with Christmas Ornament: This is probably my proudest creation. The glass water carafe was something we just had hanging around the house. I shoved a set of Philips battery operate dewdrop lights we bought from either Target or Home Depot.. can’t remember. Lastly, I added some Christmas ornament/decoration branches from Michaels that I bought a few weeks ago for a photoshoot. Voila â€" I have a lighted Christmas vase!    Lighted cork board for collecting holiday cards from friends and family: This is a similar trick to #4. All I did here was lined our bulletin board with the same battery operated  Philips battery operate dewdrop lights  and it instantly gave the board a holiday vibe!That’s it.
